Mirel™ is a family of bioplastic materials from Metabolix, they are made from a renewable resource, plant derived sugar. Mirel resins are durable but will biodegrade at the end of their useful life. Currently Metabolix is developing commercially viable chemicals from biobased sources as opposed to fossil fuels, which produce the vast majority of chemicals today. Metabolix is also developing proprietary technology that can produce energy from switch grass, oilseed, sugarcane and other crops.
